About the city
Arcachon is a commune in the Gironde department in southwestern France. It is a popular bathing location on the Atlantic coast 55 km southwest of Bordeaux in the Landes forest. It has a fine beach, and a mild climate said to be favorable to invalids suffering from pulmonary complaints.
City areas
Arcachon is a village/resort located in the department of Gironde, at the heart of the Landes de Gascogne, in the Pays de Buch. Near the town of Teste de Buch, it is extended to the southern coast by the Pyla-sur-Mer seaside resort.
Attractions
Arcachon is a fun place to spend a summer vacation, not only for the medical reasons but also for the attractions the town has to offer. Beside the beaches which are a must for any summer vacation, you can also see the famous Dune of Pyla, or explore the Museum and Aquarium, which is full of wondrous things.
Transportation
Arcachon is easily reachable by car as well as train. Some tourists choose to travel by plane, either flying to the nearby airport of Teste-de-Buch or to Bordeux and catching a train from there. The best possible solution however is still the car, the town being on the E70 route, which connects eastern and western Europe.
Events
The town of Arcachon isn’t very popular with annual events, though there are lots of spontaneous ones that take place almost every week. Those that take place every year, are indeed very grandiose and if you should catch one such event then it’s guaranteed it will make a very special memory.
Restaurants & Nightlife
The restaurants in Arcachon are a real delight not only for the gourmands, but also for the ocasional diner as well. Most restaurants present themselves as being specialized in seafood and traditional cuisine and not one of them is anything but exquisite.
History & Civilization
In the first part of the 19th century, the site already appreciated for the quality of its climate, is growing very rapidly, particularly through the establishment of the railway line Bordeaux-La Teste, which leads people throughout the region to Basin.
Strange natural beauties
The Dune of Pyla is Europe’s largest sand dune and one of the most famous natural phenomenon in the southern areas of France. Located in the Arcachon Bay area, it is a famous tourist attraction, and visitors can park, camp, shop and eat in the facility between the eastern edge of the dune and the coast road.
